What is
tandem?
Tandem is
actually a word that refers to the act of a team working one
behind the other. The term originally was used for horses that
were harnessed together, in line, rather than side-by-side. But
this is an accurate picture for a skydiving team as they jump
tandem, because one is the lead, and the other is obliged to
follow.
A tandem
skydive will involve one licensed instructor and another
jumper, usually a student or amateur. The student is harnessed
to the instructor right before the jump out of the plane. The
modern harness has been tested and proved, showing capabilities
to hold the weight of a diver even by just one hook, in the
event of an emergency.
Parachutes
are designed so well now, that even among the few accidents,
there is very rarely an accident involving a design
malfunction. And with an instructor on their back, tandem
skydivers don’t have any responsibility of the
timing to open the chute or making a landing – which leaves
them free to enjoy the full experience.

How
does “leisure skydive” go together with jumping out of a
plane?
Think of it
like a vacation. It is more relaxed than a sport dive, which is
primarily about accomplishing higher goals and realizing fresh
skills. Leisure skydiving is simply going for the pleasure of
the sport, not the challenge of the sport.
Once a sky
jumper has been certified to jump solo, they will want to take
advantage of that ability as much as they are given
opportunity. When you are alone up there, you have the freedom
to dive, roll, fly this way or that - as long as you open your
‘chute by the prescribed time. You are free to do as you
please, unhindered by another body strapped to your
back.
Leisure
skydiving offers many opportunities to
dive with groups of people, so the whole experience is a
shared one in which you can bond with companions who
share the same love for a good freefall as you
do.
